There will be a series of four or five required evening films for the course—powerful and engaging films that shed light on the history we are studying. Most of the films we watch will be in French with English subtitles. We will settle on the final list together. These will be shown on Thursday evenings per our collective schedules. They may include:
- “Les Misérables,” Dir. Tom Hooper, 2012, 158 min.
- “Germinal,” Dir. Claude Berri, 1993, 160 min.
- “A Very Long Engagement,” Dir. Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2004, 133 min.
- “Grand Illusion,” Dir. Jean Renoir, 1938, 114 min.
- “The Sorrow and the Pity,” Dir. Marcel Ophuls, 1969 (selections)
- “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” Dir. Jacques Demy, 1964, 91 min.
- “Hate,” Dir. Mathieu Kassovitz, 1995, 98 min.
